Schaden-Foer

Today's Post has an article on the current trend of Foer-bashing. For those who don't follow, "lit-tra-chure" (and as you can tell, I don't; I only use it for comedic entertainment), Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of the 2002 "snob sensation" (their word's, not mine), "Everything is Illuminated." His current work is "Extremely Loud & Incredible Close." The Times did a major hatchet-job on the book, although I believe most reviews have been fairly complimentary. However, this leads me to speculate on what causes some authors to be targets of bashing campaigns vs. authors who escape bash-freeā€¦. Actually, I have no idea. I suppose bashing could be considered a measure of your success -- the more successful you are, the more thrashings you get from others. Sigh. I never get bashed. Leave me alone for my Charlie Brown moment.

Moment passed.

I finished Memory Day by Vince Flynn last night. It's the story of a terrorist plot to detonate a nuclear bomb within the US on Memorial Day. The plotting was tight, the characters were fairly well drawn, although most of his characters were fairly black and white, which really irks me, because nobody is ALL good or all bad. The book did raise some interesting questions on the use of torture. In what circumstances? What's acceptable, etc. Very thought-provoking. If you like political thrillers, it's worth a read.

Seguing from torture to pleasure, an article I read recently said that if you're feeling stressed out, you should make a list of things that give you pleasure and you should make time to do those things once a day. For me, reading is a pleasure, although I tell myself I never have time. However, I've been reading an hour a night and I really enjoy it. I would suggest that all of you who are feeling pulled in a million directions make your own list and make sure you make time to enjoy something.

Today's romancingtheblog column is about the current reign of the series in romance. Not talking harlequin here, talking Julia Quinn's Bridgerton's, Kenyon's DarkHunter, Karen Marie Moning's Highlanders, and the last goes on, and on, and on, and on. I love series I do, I've done some, I still do some, and I quit some. Current series I love:
1. Suzanne Brockmann Troubleshooters series.
2. James Patterson, Alex Cross
3. Janet Evanovich, Stephanie Plum
4. Nora's current garden trilogy

And that's pretty much it. It's a short list, because I could never have enough time to read all the series that I would like to. I quit Laurell K. Hamilton because I lost interest. She got to be all sex, sex, sex, oh, a monster, sex, sex, sex, and I liked the first few books that were monster, monster, monster, oh, sex, sex, monster, monster. Let me say, if I want sex, I'll pick romance, not horror, you know? However, she hits the NYT list with marvelous frequency, so obviously hot monster sex is very in.

So, questions for today:
1. What's your favorite series? Series that you don't do anymore?
2. Which seven Jeopardy categories best describe you?
3. What things would you like to do every day for fun?

Kathleen, I have a confession to make. Your Bachelorette Pact series was the first time I ever rushed into a bookstore to snap up the rest of a category romance series (if that's not a tautology). You were also the first ever romance novelist I looked up online (and now I'm hooked on several sites).

But to answer your questions for the day...

1. Harry Potter. I know it's horrendously commercialised but the wait is killing me! Most of my list is made up of fantasy novels and the odd forensic scientist. And in my youth, there were Nancy Drew (Ned Nickerson thrilled my prepubescent heart to bits), the Hardy Boys, the Famous Five and the Secret Seven. I also stalked Francine Pascal's Caitlin series in the library and I think I managed to read most of them even though I had to be sneaky due to the relatively steamy love scenes. I am such a sucker for a series!

2. We don't have Jeopardy here any more.

3. Have a massage, eat chocolate, tickle people without fear of retribution.

(P.S. To Blogger: Aaaargh!)

Kat O, I swear you're an alter ego of mine. I JUST wrote "too-too tautology" in my current WIP. Scary. I'd never even KNOWN that word before, but it was the perfect synonym.... LOL. And thank you for the pick-me-up (literally and metaphorically).
1. HP6 will be here before you know it. Do you still do Patricia Cornwell? I did her early on, but after she killed off Benton, I got plenty mad.... And do you do the Lincoln Rhyme books by Deaver? I do love the first ones, but the last one didn't do much for me. LOVED the Bone Collector.
2. NO JEOPARDY???? Where are you people? The wilds of Australia? :)
3. Chocolate is always good. Tickling can be very dangerous, ask Michael Jackson's houseguests (and that's my only Michael Jackson crack today :))

Kathleen, I had to reread your post. Seriously. Because I had a really long first post draft which including Patricia Cornwell. How did you know?!? I had a really boring job during the Sydney Olympics and went through her Scarpetta novels, one book a day. And yes, I stopped when Benton was killed. When the angst overshadowed the science. I haven't read any of the Lincoln Rhyme books but now I'll have to give them a try.

Oh, actually, I have been following a romance series lately. Sort of. Thanks to you, I scour secondhand bookstores for Eloisa James novels. They don't always work for me 100% but I love her use of language so I'm never truly disappointed.

No, no jeopardy. We had it here like 10 years ago but it fizzled. But we still have the Price is Right so we mustn't be completely backward. :-)

Speaking of Michael Jackson, I just noticed some thematic links in your recent blogs: the Prince of Pop, the Prince of Wales and the Half-Blood Prince!

Kat, did you work at the Olympics? I think that would be fascinating. As for Cornwell, LOL. Great minds. Check out the Lincoln Rhyme books. Fascinating. Very meticulous. First books were the best.

I have a prince joke for the day. "The Good news is your prince is here, the bad news is it's Charles."

Glad you're onto Eloisa James. I love her stuff. I need to get her latest, and I'm currently figuring what I want to read next.... Hmmmm...

Barbara, welcome to my world!
Love your list of series. You must read quite a bit. I'll check out the Lawrence Block stuff. I have a couple of his writing books and really enjoyed them. Didn't King finish the DT series, or did I just dream that? I want to start that series someday, because I love the way he writes, but I think it's going to have to be an airplane book or a vacation book because I started the first one and put it down after 100 pages and then life got in the way.

Kathleen, yes, I did work at the Olympics - as backup to a backup of an operator. Learned a lot about weightlifting (and things people do to avoid failing drug tests), read a lot of books and went to an awesome party afterwards. Hehe...

Today, I went out and bought The Lesson Of Her Death. It has a pink cover which can only be a good omen.

*LOL@the prince joke* Poor Charles. They should have just eloped!

And finally...*drumroll* I looked you up at the bookstore and Diva will be out sometime this month here. Yes, here. Yay for not living in a backward country! :-)

Kathleen,

At the moment, I'm giving up on the Suzanne Brockmann series. Too many Navy seals for me. I also gave up Diana Gabaldon. Once Claire and Jamie reunited, I didn't need to read anymore. I also started Laurell K. Hamilton, but felt I was coming late to the game, and there were too many books to catch up.

The series I read:

1) In Death series by J.D. Robb
2) Harry Potter
3) Princess Diaries
4) The Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn
5) Stephanie Plum
6) Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt

I'm sure they're more but I'm having a brain fart today.
